When you own a takeaway establishment like a fish and chips shop, there are many aspects to consider. Not only do you have to keep your employees and customers satisfied, but you also have to consider takeaway insurance. All owners want to have trouble-free fish and chip shop insurance, so here are a few things owners need to know.
Many insurance claims in the takeaways sector fall into three areas:
- Fire
- Injury to employees
- Poisoning
If you have the correct insurance in place, your policy should cover these. However, there are provisos involved. Let’s take a look at each of them.
1. Fire
Fires can start from a variety of reasons. Most would be covered by your existing insurance policy as a standard peril. However, if the fire started from an electrical short circuit, your restaurant insurance policy would only cover it if there is an up-to-date electrical certificate in place. If the electrical certificate is out of date, then the insurance policy will not pay out.
2. Injury to employees
Injury to employees is also not an uncommon event in a takeaways business. From cuts by knives, burns from frying or flames to simple slips and trips, employee can easily be injured. To ensure that you are covered, should such an event occur, your policy must include employer’s liability cover. This covers you, the business owner, and pays out if you have been negligent in protecting your employees. Carry out periodic reviews of working practices (health & safety) to prevent future injuries is a must.
3. Poisoning
If a customer complains of being poisoned or become ill from eating at your takeaway, then your hygiene needs to be looked at from the ground up. All kitchen and cooking practices must be reviewed periodically to ensure they’re in line with hygiene, health and safety regulations and to prevent being shut down.
From an insurance perspective, the public liability section of your policy would deal with the claim from the customer.
As you can see, shop insurance is invaluable in this sector. Ensure that you and your business are protected in the event of accidents and be aware of your responsibilities as a business owner.
